From dream to reality

March 2000

Operation boat building has started. First the bulkheads and the backbone are made. By the end of may the skeleton of LARGYALO is ready and gives already an idea of her enormous size.

June to December 2000

The stringers are glued in. Then the planking can start. More than 200 sqm of marine plywood are used. The sheets have to be curbed in two directions, therefore the adjustment has to be very meticulously. By the end of the year, already 3.000 working hours have been spent on the project. After all the planks have been fixed, the borders have to be sanded. The hulls receive a clean, rounded surface.

January until June 2001

Now the keel is glued on. After that both hulls are covered with several layers of fibreglass and epoxy resin. The surfaces are sanded, painted with resin, sanded again, painted... until they are as smooth as glass.

June 9th 2001

Today is the big day when the first hull will be turned around. A truly exciting event. The hull is not stiff yet, so it is temporarily deformed. Very reassuring to see what it can withstand. Four weeks later, the second hull is turned around. This time provisional floor planks have been installed and the straps have been fixed. So this "turnaround" is less spectacular but still thrilling. Four weeks later, the second hull is turned around. This time provisional floor planks have been installed and the straps have been fixed. So this "turnaround" is less spectacular but still thrilling.

August 2001 until April 2002

The bilges, the inner bottoms of the hulls, are covered with fibreglass mats. Big portions of the interior structures are prepared and most of it installed, as well as the centreboards. At the same time the parts for the crossbeams are prepared and scarfed. By the end of April 7000 hours have been worked.

May 2002 until march 2003

The remaining interior parts are installed; the deck put on and also laminated with fibreglass. During the same time the crossbeams are glued, sanded and coated with fibreglass.

April 2003

On April 23, the hulls and the crossbeams will be transported to the South of France. The marina "Port Napoléon" close to Port-Saint-Louis at the mouth of the Rhône River is the ideal spot to finish building the boat.

May until August 2003

A lot of detail work on the hulls has to be done, as well as the preparation for painting. By mid-august the hulls get their final painting.

August 30th 2003

Today the hulls leave the hangar and will be connected to the crossbeams in their correct width. The problem to be faced is the exact placement of the hulls! They have to be exactly parallel; in the same height and absolutely horizontal in longitudinal and transverse axis. Not an easy task on the slightly sloping terrain!

Mid October 2003

Strips, in a total length of almost 20 m, will be mounted in one piece on each side of the hulls. The ropes holding the crossbeams will be fixed to them. Besides that, they will be comfortable holding rails while swimming around the boat.

November to January 2004

The two masts have to be built. Therefore the wood strips have to be sunk and scarfed. Each one will be glued to form a polygon with twelve sides and then sanded round. They then get a fibreglass covering and a varnish. The hatches are built at the same time and now replace the temporary coverings.

February until September 2004

The four deck pod cabins are built in this time. They were a big challenge because each of the frontages had to be curved in two directions. But it was worth the effort because they give LARGYALO an elegant and streamlined look.

November 11th 2004

The masts are up. A huge crane put the masts cautiously into the gates between the deck pod cabins. To make things difficult, the crane stood at an angle, so the boom had to move in different levels all in the same time, so that the mast could swing into the correct position.

Now LARGYALO looks like a real sailing boat.

New website of The Ark of Ideas

Our new website is now online in a first version. For the time being, its purpose is mainly to gain experience about the acceptance of the layout, clarity and user guidance.
The first Web 2 elements are activated, others, dealing directly with the activities on board and the onshore events will be added in due time.

This website is aiming to build up a big and lively community, that is actively participating in the climate protection initiative. To grant a maximum of spontaneity, no registration is necessary to participate in dialogs or ratings. However, for functions like the social network or the placement of portraits into the “community sails”, it will be necessary to set up a user profile.

The Ark of Ideas as a floating cinema

Our catamaran Largyalo will be transformed into a floating cinema. Due to the size and construction of the vessel, it offers the opportunity to set up an entire screening unit ( beamer and screen) onto the deck, and show movies via backward projection.
The width of the projection can be almost 10 meters, and the screen can be put up sideways as well as abeam. Thus, we can show interesting documentaries and reportages in ports or very close to the shore and even in busy anchorages as a “dinghy-drive-in” cinema.
